Fish Dish
This is an awesome project that I originally found on a wonderful blog named Deep Space Sparkle (http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/03/19/ceramic-fish-art-project/). 2nd and 3rd graders used air dry clay, fish template, clay tools, textured items, styrofoam bowls and acrylic paint (students only had the primary colors, white and black) to design their very own fish dish. We first looked at a bunch of different types of fish (I had mainly colorful ones) and compared the way fish are illustrator vs how they look in real life. We used the book Rainbow Fish and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to make our comparisons. Students created their own fish dish and painted them using their knowledge of color.
Clay Cupcakes
4th and 5th graders studied the artist Wayne Thiebaud while creating these sweet ceramic cupcakes! Students used air dry clay (I do not have a kiln) and acrylic paint. They only had access to the primary colors, white and black. Each cupcake was super unique in color and style. These were a huge hit with the students.

Jim Dine Papier Mache Hearts
4th graders wanted to create a heart sculpture. My students learned about symbols, starting with our subject matter, a heart, and analyzed the artist Jim Dine. They used a cardboard, the papier mache and primary colors with black and white paint to create their works of art.

Pop Art Prints
5th and 6th graders learned about printmaking and pop art while studying Andy Warhol. My students had never seen any work by Warhol before and they really enjoyed thinking about everyday objects as art. Students were asked to make 4 prints on 4 different colored papers and asked to make borders using a contrasting color using their knowledge of color combinations (complimentary, monochromatic, warm/cool, etc.).

Warm & Cool Landscape
Kinders and 1st graders used sharpie marker to draw landscapes. They used their knowledge of different types of lines to create texture in their landscapes. Kinders completed 2 separate paintings one warm and one cool. 1st graders had the challenge of warm on top and cool on the bottom. We used liquid watercolors which is my new favorite material to use with the kids.

Monet Bridges
Second graders learn about Monet and Impressionism. We used drafting tape to tape out the bridges and then used their finger "impressions" to create the setting. Once the paint is dry we pull the tape off to reveal the crisp white bridge. This project is most successful when the students cover all the white space. Great way to talk about positive/negative space.
Kandinsky Circles
This project was based on the abstract expressionist Kandinsky.Every 3rd and 4th graders was responsible for creating 2 of the circles you see in the murals. This was all about mixing unique colors. Students only had the primary colors, black and white paint to create different hues, tints and shades they desired. These beauties were hanging in the hall way all year long!
