Ink Monsters

As a imagination booster Kinders-3rd graders creates monsters out of "spilled ink". Students watched multiple videos from artist Stephan Bucher who created Daily Monster. Students then used India Ink and straws to create their ink blot. Once they had their unique ink blot to work with they had different drawing materials available to work with (markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.)

Ode to Oldenburg

2nd graders studied Claus Oldenburg and specifically his sculpture "Two Cheeseburgers with Everything". Students definitely got the humor of Oldenburgs work and enjoyed analyzing his art. Students then used the medium of collage to create their cheeseburgers with everything.

Fish Dish

This is an awesome project that I originally found on a wonderful blog named Deep Space Sparkle (http://www.deepspacesparkle.com/2012/03/19/ceramic-fish-art-project/). 2nd and 3rd graders used air dry clay, fish template, clay tools, textured items, styrofoam bowls and acrylic paint (students only had the primary colors, white and black) to design their very own fish dish. We first looked at a bunch of different types of fish (I had mainly colorful ones) and compared the way fish are illustrator vs how they look in real life. We used the book Rainbow Fish and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish to make our comparisons. Students created their own fish dish and painted them using their knowledge of color.

Monet Bridges

Second graders learn about Monet and Impressionism. We used drafting tape to tape out the bridges and then used their finger "impressions" to create the setting. Once the paint is dry we pull the tape off to reveal the crisp white bridge. This project is most successful when the students cover all the white space. Great way to talk about positive/negative space.

Henna Hands

Students learn about the Body Art Henna. We combine the social studies lesson about India with an element of art, line. Students watch a video of Henna getting applied at an Indian Weddings, have multiple images of Henna as resources, and have successfully identified and created many different types of lines. Then they create their own designs but tracing their hand and filling their empty hands with patterns of lines.
